Summer reading program under way at Jeff library

Attention all children: “Get On Your Mark, Get Set…READ!”

It’s time for the 2016 summer reading program at the Jefferson public library. Registrations are being taken now for the program.

The summer reading program encourages children to read throughout the months of June and July to maintain and improve their reading skills while they are not in school. Children who are 4 years old through 5th grade can participate in this free program.

Children completing the program will be playing “Bookopoly” to earn prizes at the Game Store, doing craft and art activities, attending puppet shows, movies, and special performances.

The Hanson Family – they juggle on unicycles – will perform Monday, June 27, at 1 pm and the Science Center of Iowa – always a big hit – will present a program Tuesday, July 19, at 10 am.  Both of these free performances will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and the public is invited to attend.

Children will be awarded a book bag, bookmark, reading, pizza, and ice cream treat certificates, T-shirt, Blank Park Zoo pass, and paperback book at a final “Game Station” party at Russell Park. Children will be playing Minute-to-Win-It-Games, human ring toss, running pancake races, and participating in Olympic pool noodle events.

A brand new bicycle will be awarded to a lucky winner at the final party. “It’s all about games at the Jefferson public library this summer and all of our children who participate are winners,” said Terry Clark, children’s librarian.

The summer reading program is free thanks to sponsors Breadeaux Pizza, Dairy Queen, Fareway, Greene County board of supervisors, Home State Bank, Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library.

Persons who want more information can contact the children’s department at the Jefferson public library at 515-386-4415.
